Big Sur Backpacking: ReWild Your Soul

Very few people backpack Big Sur to receive the good tidings of the land. This trip is for women (and folks who identify as female) that want to expand their sense of awareness of self and nature on a curated, multi-day backpacking trip through the magical backcountry of Big Sur. Carrying only what we need on our backs, we will walk while listening to our inner and outer landscapes, exploring our connection to wilderness.
This trip will be lead by 2 experienced retreat/outdoor facilitators. This 3-night, 4-day trip takes us to high peaks and beautiful, remote valleys. With chances to swim in fresh water pools and explore valleys where Esselen peoples roamed centuries ago, the intention of this trip is to slow down and deeply connect with the wild world. Each day will be crafted to maximize time spent reveling in nature. To support our deepening awareness of land and self we will practice daily check-in circles, “wild soul” prompts and eco-centered reflection.
We take care of all the details regarding planning, packing, what to expect and what gear to bring. All breakfasts and dinners are included (and delicious). Maximum enrollment: 8 people.
Meet your leaders: MSA founder Caitlin Davies is an experienced outdoor guide & backpacker, WFR certified and expert nature connection facilitator. Her co-leader is wild-woman Sarai Shapiro, founder of Gaia Girls Passages. Together they are a powerful, dynamic duo that are excellent holders of space, conduits of healing and bridges to wilderness.
ITINERARY (full, detailed itinerary sent upon registration)
Meet at the designated meeting spot at 3PM. Directions sent upon registration & payment. We'll check gear, make camp and take a short walk (0.5 miles) to a vista before circling up, setting intentions and talking about our journey into the Ventana Wilderness of eastern Big Sur. Dinner, campfire & sleep under a blanket of stars
Hot beverages ready by 7am. Breakfast. Hike 6 miles to our first night’s camp on the way to a remote Big Sur backcountry valley. Lunch enjoyed on trail. Set up camp, have some rest and journal time before evening circle, dinner and campfire.
Hot beverages ready by 7am. Breakfast. Explore & wander in the remote Pine Valley. With time to explore waterfalls, Esselen grinding stones and sandstone formations, we’ll have the afternoon to allow our wild souls to unfold through solo time on the land, paying special attention to cultivating intimacy with place. Dinner, circle and star walk at camp before bed.
Hot beverages ready by 7am. Breakfast. Optional morning dip & final circle before hiking back to China Camp at a moderate pace. Lunch enjoyed along the way. Before arriving at our cars we will integrate our journeys and say our goodbyes as we step into a new appreciation of earth, self and nature.

What Should I Pack?
Our guides will send you a thorough packing list along with "what to expect" on this backpacking trip upon completing your reservation. A few things we know you'll need: a ~45-65L backpack, a good (warm) sleeping bag, sleeping pad and tent. Take this time to ponder if you're really ready to embark on a journey of soul. The gear is a small commitment for a lifetime of being connected and nourished by a ever-deepening relationship with the natural world.
Breakfasts and dinners, permits and camping fees and 2 experienced guides. Bring your own personal gear (clothing, etc), LUNCHES and special snacks if desired. Transportation is not included. Once you get yourself to the trailhead, you're taken care of every step of the way.
Are the Hikes Hard?
This trip is for beginning/intermediate backpackers that have some experience in the backcountry or very strong first-time backpackers. The terrain is hilly as we are in the Ventana mountain range. If you've never hiked before, we recommend a more beginner-friendly trip. If you're a strong hiker that has never backpacked before and you feel confident you can backpack 6 miles with weight & you have a willingness to expand your comfort zone with an open heart, this is a great trip for you. The hike is 6 miles there/back and there are significant climbs, especially on the way back (elevation gain ~2000'). If you can comfortably hike 6 miles with weight on your back, you'll do great. We take a moderate pace and stop often.
